As I explained executive/leadership coaching to my seatmate, I realized that others may have the same questions.
Practicing yoga isn’t about doing poses on a mat or in a class; just as leading isn’t about being in charge of other people. Practicing yoga and leadership are simply ways of being – preferably with compassion and truthfulness.
Leadership takes courage. Whether leading a company, a division, a team or just yourself, it requires courage to continually “put yourself out there” and take the lead. So what is your motivation to lead?
Congratulations! You are in a position of authority and in charge. Perhaps you are excited and energized. Or perhaps you are feeling like, “I am their leader. Where did they go?” Too often people think being in charge means (1) they have to prove how much they know, and/or (2) they can now make people do what they want, how they want it. At best, these approaches will get you compliance; rarely will they get you followers.
Are you relying on outdated approaches to developing your leaders? As you invest to develop yourself or other employees in your organization as leaders, recognize that there is no one right way. It is important to consider type, preferences, experiences and competencies, stage at which one makes meaning, and many other factors when determining when and how a leader can best be developed to their fullest potential.
